Can Solar Panels be Retrofitted to Commercial Vehicles?
Yes. Genie Insights’ solar solutions can be installed on both new vehicles and existing commercial vehicle fleets, making retrofit a practical option for operators looking to improve battery reliability, reduce downtime or provide supplementary power to onboard equipment.
Our lightweight, flexible solar panels are bonded directly to the vehicle surface, rather than mechanically fixed, helping to simplify installation and minimise intervention to the vehicle body. A roof gland provides a secure, weatherproof cable entry into the vehicle in a retrofit installation.
From Individual Vehicles to Nationwide Retrofit Programmes
Solar systems can be retrofitted to individual vehicles or deployed across larger fleets. Installations can be carried out by Genie Insights’ network of trained installation partners, providing flexibility to support different vehicle types, fleet sizes and locations.
For larger fleets, we can also support coordinated retrofit programmes across multiple locations, helping operators introduce solar technology to existing vehicles efficiently and consistently.
Our experience includes major fleet retrofit programmes involving thousands of commercial vehicles across the UK.
For many fleet operators, retrofit and new vehicle installations run alongside one another. Solar can be retrofitted to vehicles already in service while also being specified on new vehicles as they enter the fleet.
In some cases, a retrofit programme provides the starting point for introducing solar across a fleet, with the technology subsequently incorporated into the operator’s ongoing vehicle replacement programme. This allows fleets to realise the benefits on existing vehicles while progressively making solar part of their standard specification for new vehicles.
